Renault Clio 4 (2017) Battery Not Working After Replacement – Problem and Solution

One of the problems car owners sometimes experience after a battery replacement is the failure to start, especially in vehicles equipped with a keyless start system. In this article, we discuss a situation that 2017 Renault Clio 4 users might encounter and its solution.

Problem Encountered After Battery Replacement

I recently replaced the battery of my 17 reg (2017 model) Renault Clio. After the replacement, strangely, the car wouldn’t start. All electrical components (headlights, radio, windows, etc.) were working fine, but when I pressed the start button, the engine did not crank.

At first, I thought there was an issue with the new battery and reinstalled the original one. However, the problem persisted. So the issue didn’t seem to be just about the battery replacement.

Mechanic Intervention and Diagnosis Process

I called a mechanic to resolve the issue. The technician checked all the vehicle’s systems. The electrical components were functioning normally and there were no error codes. He managed to start the car manually, but the card-based start was still inactive. After a thorough inspection, the mechanic came to the following conclusion:

After the battery was disconnected, the car reset itself into key-based start mode. However, this vehicle was factory equipped with a keyless start system.

In other words, the system mistakenly switched itself from card-based to key-based starting mode.

Solution

To solve the problem, the mechanic properly reconnected the new battery and restored the reset start mode back to card-based. As a result, the car started normally again via the keyless system.

To avoid such issues:

  • Replace the battery without fully cutting off vehicle power,

  • Get professional support,

  • Check the start modes after battery replacement.

Conclusion

An important lesson for those experiencing Renault Clio 4 not starting after battery replacement: In modern cars, it’s important to remember that not only mechanical but also electronic systems can be reset. Especially in vehicles with keyless start systems, be cautious of such resets after battery replacement.
